Carnival Celebration is based in Miami, Florida, and also takes the name of a previous Carnival cruise ship, Celebration, that was part of the holiday class. When a cruise line has 27 ships in the fleet with even more on order or being constructed, it can be easy to lose track. Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise line in the world, and there are several different class ships, each being built and joining the fleet at different times. We will keep track of the Carnival cruise ships by age, so you don’t have to. Carnival Splendor is one of a kind when it comes to the different classes of ships from Carnival.

Fantasy Class Ships

On average, you can expect to find about 5,000 passengers sailing. Carnival Sunrise  (formerly Carnival Triumph) features an exciting splash zone for kids and a piano bar where adults can sing along to their favorite songs all night. The ship sails on two to five-night and six to nine-night cruises from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels.

SO THAT’S ALL THE FUN ON CARNIVAL CELEBRATION®?

Carnival Firenze is one of the newer ships coming to the fleet, and though it’s not the largest, it provides exceptional amenities and experiences for passengers. Carnival Paradise is second ship the Fantasy Class and sister to Carnival Elation. She is 70,367 GRTs and carries 2,052 passengers (based on two per cabin).

Other than that, though, Carnival Splendor is basically a variation of the Conquest-class ships. The main difference between Carnival Splendor and its Conquest-class cousins is that the former has an enlarged and redesigned top deck area. The structure around the main pool of the ship is noticeably different, with a retractable, sliding glass roof that you won't find on the Conquest-class ships, as well as a water play area for kids.

Fun for your whole crew

The ship was also the second in the fleet to receive the new Carnival-colored inspired livery during a dry dock in 2021. She is the first Vista-class cruise ship for Carnival Cruise Line and was the first new-class vessel since Carnival Dream in 2009. There was huge anticipation for the Carnival Vista on her features and design. She entered service in 2016 and was named by godmother Miss USA, Deshauna Barber. The ship’s godmother is Dr. Lucille O’Neal, mother of Carnival Cruise Line’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal.

Carnival Venezia – 2023

The two Fantasy-class ships that are left are mostly used in secondary ports — such as Jacksonville, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama — that might not be able to support bigger vessels. Dream-class ships also offer water parks with waterslides on their top decks, miniature golf courses, sports courts for basketball and volleyball, and multiple pools. As of December 4, 2023, the newest Carnival cruise ship is the Carnival Jubilee.

That actually works in its favor if you're a retiree who enjoys smaller ships and vintage design — in this case, more artwork and decor by Farcus. If a traditional suite is more your style, consider a Grand Suite, which includes priority embarkation, disembarkation and dining times, as well as access to the Havana pool area. Note, however, that Grand Suites run only 345 square feet with 85-square-foot balconies — disappointing when you consider some of Royal Caribbean's largest rooms are nearly five times that size.

I look at the ports of call, the space-to-guest ratio, the amenities and onboard activities, and the launch point. In addition to having a weather-proof main pool area, the Spirit-class ships are great for far-flung destinations because of their relatively small size, which allows them to access smaller ports. At just 88,500 tons, they're among the smallest ships in the Carnival fleet — less than half the size of Carnival's new Excel-class vessels.

Also, an 18% gratuity is added to bar bills and the cover charge of the Chef's Table. Each group has its own age-appropriate activities ranging from face painting to pirate adventures. On many ships there are extensive dedicated spaces for the different groups. In short, there's a ton to do up top on Carnival vessels — and it's almost all available to every passenger on board the vessels at no extra charge (the roller coaster is the only exception). Carnival Panorama also houses Carnival's first cooking classroom.

In fact, Vista Class ships had their own set of firsts for the cruise industry. Carnival Panorama has the first trampoline park at sea through its partnership with SkyZone. Additionally, Carnival Vista and Horizon feature the first IMax theaters at sea. Until Mardi Gras debuted in 2021, most of the ships in Carnival’s fleet were largely very similar, even as they varied in age and size. Carnival Breeze is ideal for a short cruise out of Galveston, Texas.

From one day to the next you’ll find new stuff on the menu — so make sure to come back and see what surprising specialties are ready to delight you for breakfast, lunch or dinner. What started as a yearly vacation with family quickly turned into a passion for travel, cruising and adventure. She even studied abroad on Semester at Sea, sailing the world on a ship while taking courses for college and visiting 4 continents. Fantasy Class ships really showcase their age when it comes to the number of balconies onboard. Because the ships are so intimately sized and built before balconies were wildly popular for cruisers, there are only a limited number of balconies available. The oldest and smallest ships in Carnival’s fleet are found in the Fantasy Class.

The new addition to the fleet departed on her first guest sailing in November 2022 from Brisbane in, Australia. Carnival Magic is the second ship in the Dream-class and is identical to her sister ships in the same class. The ship was the first in the fleet to receive the cruise line’s new red, white, and blue livery during a dry dock that took place in May 2021. Carnival Horizon is the second Vista-class ship in the fleet and became the second Carnival ship to restart operations in 2021 following the industry-wide pause due to the pandemic.

On the West Coast, sailings to Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska are the norm. Carnival's biggest operations are out of PortMiami and Port Canaveral in Florida; Galveston, Texas; Long Beach, California; and New Orleans — all major cruise hubs. You'll also find Carnival ships in such secondary cruise ship ports as Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Mobile, Alabama; and Jacksonville, Florida.
